Making Noise

April 27, 2019

The latest edition of Making Noise — concerts campaigning for suicide prevention will see musicians perform at The Sound Archive, Kirkwall, this evening, Friday.

The event has been organised by the Making Noise Group, who have been campaigning locally for suicide prevention and the elimination of the stigma associated with mental health.

The campaign aims to amongst other things encourage young people and adults needing help or not feeling right to speak out more openly about their problems and mental health issues in general. There is a lot of help out there but people do not seem to be seeking them, hence the need to let those amongst us needing help, know how to seek the help available.

The Making Noise Group recently received funding from the OIC’s Culture Fund to use music as a tool to bring members of the local and wider community together, to continue to embed local concerns as local priorities. This has resulted in a series of music events to raise awareness about the stigma associated with mental health, encourage people to start talking about their problems and help stem the upward trajectory of suicide.

“There are over 200 types of mental illnesses, with everyone having a state of mental health,” said Theo Ogbhemhe of the Making Noise Group.

“Problems with mental health can be just as detrimental as any other illness, but sadly they ain’t always visible. The Making Noise Group through the ‘Making Noise Music Concert’ aim to provide a safe place for everyone to come enjoy a night out and have fun, no matter who you are or what you’re going through.

“We aim to dance and put smiles on people’s faces — whilst encouraging our brothers and sisters struggling with mental health issues to know that it is okay to seek help when you ain’t okay.”

Tonight’s event will see the return of musicians Nysflo and Jetplay, beginning at 8pm.

Seeing Same

April 27, 2019

A Grandmother and granddaughter duo, Jean Skinner and Alannah Cooper, has opened a rather unusual exhibition together, exploring the parallels between their work.

Seeing Same, an exhibition of Jean’s oil paintings alongside Alannah’s photography, is currently on display in the Exhibition Room of The Old Library, Kirkwall, until May 4.
