Winter safety reminder
With dark winter days and severe winter weather just around the corner, Orkney Islands Council is reminding parents to make sure their children are safe and warm for the trip to school.
Council advice includes ensuring children wear reflective vests on the way to and from school, and making sure children are wrapped up against the elements when they are waiting for school transport.
Parents are also encouraged to speak to their children about what do to if school transport is delayed — for example, agreeing a length of time that children should wait for their bus before returning, or phoning home or a trusted neighbour, if it doesn’t arrive.
The council would also like to remind other road users that they should take extreme care if they have to overtake a stationary school bus.
