Women’s History conference in Orkney for the first time

Over the next few days, Orkney College is hosting the 2013 Women’s History conference — an event exploring the historical experience of women’s relationship with unpaid and paid work.

Speakers will come from Orkney, Scotland, England, Canada and Scandinavia, with the Sue Innes Memorial Lecture given by Elizabeth Ewan, research professor of Scottish history at the University of Guelph, in Canada, tonight at 5pm on the subject of Producing Women in Pre-Modern Scotland.

Women’s History Scotland promotes research in, and knowledge of, women’s and gender history, both in Scotland and further afield. Its annual conference brings together academics, postgraduates, community scholars and independent researchers, as well as those who are interested in the history of women.

A spokeswoman said: “This is our first time in Orkney and we are hoping that Orkney residents will come along to hear some interesting talks, to network with women’s historians and to find out more about Women’s History Scotland’s activities.”
