A possible solution to the problem of waves crashing over the second barrier in winter looks set to be discussed by councillors tomorrow, Tuesday.

A report on the issue is to come before elected members of the OIC at the policy and resources committee.

Set to be discussed in private, the report contains details in relation to the possible purchase of a concrete structure called a caisson, which could potentially be put in place on the east side of the barrier as a breakwater.

The report follows on from a suggestion made by vice-convener, councillor Jim Foubister, at an OIC development and infrastructure committee meeting back in December.

At that same meeting the issue of waves coming over the barrier was described as the “biggest danger to life and limb in Orkney.”
