Fishermen urged to take up free lifejacket offer
Orkney fishermen are being urged to take advantage of a free lifejacket scheme run by the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation.
The scheme aims to supply a free, specially designed lifejacket (or personal flotation device – PFD), to every fisherman actively fishing under a current fishing licence and holding mandatory safety certification.
Specifically designed to meet the needs of commercial fishermen, it is hoped the free PFDs will see a significant reduction in the number of fishermen going to sea without a lifejacket.
On Monday, November 26, a roadshow event will take place at the Maritime Studies Department of Orkney College in Stromness, between 7:30pm and 9pm. A second event will take place the following day, again between 7.30pm and 9pm, at Orkney Sailing Club, The Girnel, Kirkwall.
Fishermen are urged to get their applications in as soon as possible. Those who apply after the Orkney and Shetland road show dates will still be able to pick up a PFD, as a supply of the jackets will be left on the Northern Isles with an approved presenter.
Applications can be found online at www.sff.co.uk
