Funding secured for Scapa Flow Visitor Centre refurbishment
Orkney Islands Council has secured just over £25,000 from Museums Galleries Scotland towards the upcoming refurbishment of the Scapa Flow Visitor Centre and Museum.
The funding will be used to support the conservation of artefacts from the museum’s collection during the works, including the SMS Hindenburg Ensign, a large porthole from HMS Hampshire, a bulkhead door from SMS Brummer and wartime wooden toys.
The refurbishment project, due to get under way in April, aims to restore the buildings and enhance interpretation, update displays and conserve nationally and internationally important artefacts.
It is hoped that a new building will also be created too which will house a new exhibition area, cafe, toilet facilities and information areas. The museum will close to the public during the works.
