Jack Moodie, one of the OIC councillors for Kirkwall West and Orphir, has resigned.

Mr Moodie confirmed his resignation last night, stating that it is for personal reasons and not political.

In a letter to The Orcadian this week, he said: “On the one hand, I have struggled with motivation and enthusiasm for the job for several years. The summer break has helped me see clearly that I no longer can sit through meetings any longer, so I resigned on Monday.”

Commenting, OIC convener Steven Heddle said: “I am sorry Jack has decided to stand down because he has been both a good councillor and a good friend to me during our time on the council.

“While the latter won’t change, his contribution as a councillor will be missed. I fully respect his decision and wish him all the best for the future.”

Jack Moodie was first elected to the Council in May 1999 and initially served until May 2003. He stood again in May 2007, when he was elected to serve the Kirkwall West and Orphir ward, and was re-elected in the local government elections held in May 2012.

A decision on when a by-election takes place will be announced shortly.
