McArthur calls for permanent reprieve for Orkney PO
Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has been assured by rural affairs secretary that the Orkney Fish Producers Organisation will continue to be recognised, but that discussions with his officials will continue.
Mr McArthur said on Thursday: “In September, the cabinet secretary told me that the Orkney PO had been informed that they would cease to be recognised come the end of the year. Today, he confirmed that the imminent threat had been lifted, while discussions with his officials will continue.
“As Mr Lochhead acknowledged, the PO provides a valuable role on behalf of its members. It holds community quotas on behalf of the local councils in Orkney and the Western Isles and also plays a part in helping new entrants into the industry.
“I welcome the move away from de-recognition next month, but believe that an early decision needs to be made, lifting the threat that still hangs over the Orkney PO.”
