MSP celebrates Orkney’s commitment to fair trade

The commitment of people in Orkney to fair trade has been highlighted by local MSP Liam McArthur during a debate in parliament yesterday afternoon, marking the first anniversary of Scotland being awarded Fair Trade Nation status.

Mr McArthur drew MSPs’ attention to the wide range of initiatives in the islands that have led to Orkney achieving Fair Trade Zone status, and a number of schools being similarly recognised by the Fair Trade Foundation.

“It has been excellent to see the commitment to fair trade shown by people of all ages across Orkney. I attended the launch of Westray and Papa Westray’s bid for fair trade island status a number of years ago, since when the movement has grown in popularity locally,” Mr McArthur said.

“Schools in Orkney have been in the vanguard of raising awareness and promoting the benefits of fair trade. It is no surprise, therefore, to see a number of them rewarded for their efforts by the Fair Trade Foundation. I was able to use today’s debate in parliament to highlight the achievements of pupils in Westray, Sanday and at KGS, all of whom have been highly praised for the creative ways in which they are engaging with the fair trade movement.

“I also drew attention to the excellent ‘Buy Fair and Buy Local in Orkney’ initiative. This will see links being made between local and fair trade produce that can help broaden public support and widen the benefits felt by producers here and in developing countries.”
