Netballers set to face old adversaries in 35th county clash
Orkney’s netballers are set to face Shetland in the 35th annual inter-county clash, with a young squad featuring eight new caps and eight players under-18 hoping to make it a double victory for the county.
The county’s ‘A’ and ‘B’ sides are due to take on their great rivals on Saturday afternoon, with the ‘A’ side hoping to follow-up last year’s 49-42 victory, and the ‘B’ side hoping to avenge the 28-47 defeat they suffered at the Pickaquoy Centre.
Injuries have meant that Orkney travel north with a slightly younger squad than in previous years but ‘A’ team captain Julie Campbell said the girls were up for the challenge and she felt they could pick up two victories in Lerwick.
Speaking in this week’s The Orcadian she said: “We’ve got to give it our all; we’ve got nothing to lose and we’ve been training hard for it. I think we’ve got plenty of experience as well, with some of the older players that are there.”
Eric Tait is ‘B’ team captain, picking up her third cap for Orkney.
The ‘A’ match is set to kick-off at 12.30pm, with the ‘B’ match due to follow at 3pm, both at Clickimin in Lerwick.
