Opening date for new Kirkwall swimming pool

Orkney’s new swimming pool will open to the public on Saturday 22nd June Orkney Islands Council have announced.

The new facility at the Pickaquoy Centre was handed over to the council today, Friday, and prior to the opening OIC are inviting the public along for a ‘sneak peak’ on Friday June 14th.

The new pool will handed over to the Picky Centre next week and staff from the leisure centre will then begin installing equipment in the new fitness area.

The ‘dry’ areas of the facility such as the gym, squash courts and soft play areas will open a week earlier than the swimming pool section on Saturday June 15th.

An opening ceremony for the new swimming pool will also follow on July 4th with The Princess Royal doing the honours.

During the transition to the new pool, the existing pool at Kirkwall Grammar School will close from Tuesday June 11th for a ten day period — during which time there will be no pool facilities in Kirkwall.
