Pentland Ferries latest acquisition Orcadia, is enroute to Orkney this morning.

The ship was previously the Clyde based Cal-Mac ferry Saturn, and was purchased by Pentland Ferries earlier this year.

The ship has been undergoing a refit and name change Garvel on the Clyde in recent weeks in preparation for the journey north, and is now heading up the west coast of Scotland.

Pentland Ferries’ managing director Andrew Banks previously stated that the ship has been brought in to provide back-up for the catamaran Pentalina, with options for it to be used for freight work, as well as for working with the renewable energy sector around Orkney and the Pentland Firth, should the requirement occur.

He also said that the vessel gave the company more options when it came to carrying freight, potentially at peak times when the Pentalina can operate at capacity on the Pentland Firth service.
