Orkney ambassadors chosen for Year of Young People

Three Year of Young People 2018 Ambassadors have been selected to promote the incredible opportunities on offer to young Scots in Orkney.

Earlier this week the First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, announced a major programme of events and activities which will take place next year. A global first, the Year of Young People 2018 will provide a platform to showcase the personalities, talents and achievements of Scotland’s young people.

The ambassadors for Orkney are Hope Laing (13), Nicola Williams (14) and Jordan Gunn (11). They will be involved in making sure that young people and organisations in their communities know about Year of Young People 2018 activities, while getting involved in projects with local authority and other partners. The three youngsters will also encourage their peers and older generations to challenge negative stereotypes of young people within communities.

Kerry Spence Orkney Islands Council Community Learning Development (CLD) Team Leader is delighted to be supporting the year of the young people programme in Orkney.

“We are lucky enough to have one of Scotland’s 30 Year of the Young People Champions here in Orkney,” she said.

“Our Champion Lucy Leech (15) will be supported by a brilliant team of Year of the Young People Ambassadors ranging from 10-19 years of age, all keen to showcase and celebrate Orkney’s young people.

“The CLD team are working closely to support the Year of the Young People Champion and Ambassadors to ensure The Year of Young People is a year to remember.”

Young people in Orkney are also being encouraged to apply for the next round of Create18 funding by 22nd January 2018, for events taking place between July and December. Create18 is a funding programme administered by young people, on behalf of EventScotland, for young event organisers.
