Orkney awarded Fairtrade Zone status
Orkney Islands Council announced today that Orkney is now officially a Fairtrade Zone, having been awarded the accreditation by the Fairtrade Foundation.
Fairtrade Zone status was awarded in response to a campaign led by the Orkney Fair Trade Group, with the backing of the council.
The Fairtrade Foundation considered a portfolio of evidence about the campaigning and promotional work by many sectors and groups.
As a result of gaining Fairtrade Zone status, all participating shops, hospitality outlets, businesses, schools, churches and community groups can use the well-recognised Fairtrade logo and brand in publicity materials.
The announcement of Fairtrade Zone status for Orkney, coincides with the start of Fairtrade Fortnight (February 24 to March 9) when a host of Fair and Local events are planned across the county.
