Orkney FC to take on league leaders

Halkirk won on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the North of Scotland Cup in July, the last meeting between the two sides. Thorfinn Stout (above) was on the scoresheet that day and will be hopeful of a repeat on Saturday.

Orkney FC are hoping to play their first North Caledonian League match since Saturday, November 28 with league leaders Halkirk United due to visit the county.

There was some midweek controversy as Halkirk were deducted three points and fined for fielding an ineligible player during a 3-2 win over Thurso at the end of November, with the three points awarded to Thurso. It later emerged that the player in question had already signed for Wick Academy.

As a result, Halkirk’s lead at the top of the table has been cut to four points, with Orkney a further four points behind in fourth place. The two sides were due to go head-to-head in January until the match was the victim of a very late call-off due to a frozen pitch.

Before that match, manager Charlie Alway said Halkirk were “the most complete side, in terms of ability and attitude in the North Caledonian League.”

Golspie Sutherland beat Orkney 5-3 in the Football Times Cup recently but the home side will be hopeful that they can extend their 100% home record this season.

The match is due to kick off at 12.30pm at the KGS 3G pitch.
