A Kirkwall resident is to attempt to set a world record this weekend by becoming the fastest person to climb a mile on an indoor climbing wall.

40-year-old Paul Gray is raising funds and awareness for the Orkney’s Blide Trust’s depression support and had raised almost £2,000 as of Monday. As it is a world record attempt, the attempt is open to the public, and while Mr Gray couldn’t promise that it would be the most exciting few hours in the world, he was hopeful that public support would spur him on at the Pickaquoy Centre climbing wall on Saturday afternoon.

To set a world-record, Mr Gray has to ascend the wall 190 times in under three hours. He is due to start the challenge at approximately 12.30pm.
