Warning over internet drinking craze

The Orkney Alcohol and Drugs Partnership is reminding members of the public of the potential dangers around the internet drinking game ‘Nek Nomination’ which has reached Orkney.

The game, which encourages people to down a pint of alcohol and then upload a video after it, while nominating others to follow suit, has already been linked to two deaths in Ireland and there are fears that more could fall victim to this craze.

Dr Louise Wilson, director of public health, said, “We are very concerned about this craze, while some people are drinking sensibly and taking a humorous slant on this, others are putting themselves in potential danger. Mixing excessive amounts of alcohol and consuming them quickly can be very harmful and even fatal.”

PC Joanna Murray, community safety officer, Police Scotland, reminded people to be careful and responsible if they choose to undertake a ‘Nek Nomination’ she said: “When an act becomes more than just harmless fun and a criminal offence it will be dealt with appropriately. We ask everyone to be responsible for their own actions especially when putting themselves, others or property in danger.”
