Chip in to keep your dog safe
Under new legislation from the Scottish Government all dogs will have to be microchipped and registered from early next month.
The new rules come into effect on April 6 and state that dogs are required to have an approved microchip fitted from the age of eight-weeks-old.
Owners will also need to ensure that the details registered for their microchipped dog are accurate and updated when needed, such as when there is a change of the home address.
OIC Environmental Health Manager David Brown said: “It makes very good sense for dogs to be microchipped – if they go missing it helps ensure they get re-united with their owners.
“I would encourage all dog owners to ensure that their dogs are microchipped and, just as importantly, that their details are up to date.
“The new regulations will make this a legal obligation. It is a straightforward procedure and owners can find out more by contacting their vet.”
The change to the law received wide support in a public consultation last year. The Scottish Government says the aim is to help reduce the number of lost and abandoned dogs in Scotland – safeguarding animal welfare and promoting responsible ownership.
