Islands fuel issues highlighted

During a parliamentary debate on Tuesday to mark the 30th anniversary of Energy Action Scotland, Orkney MSP Liam McArthur took the opportunity to set out the specific problems faced by those in the islands in terms of fuel poverty.

Speaking during the debate, Mr McArthur said: “Orkney is second only to the Western Isles when it comes to rates of fuel. Given higher fuel costs; our longer, harsher winters; the large number of hard to heat properties and being off the gas grid, it is perhaps not surprising that almost half the households in Orkney spend more than 10% of their disposable income in heating costs.

“It does, however, require a response, and one that is tailored to our islands’ needs. In that context, I welcome the steps being taken by the council to focus on this issue and Orkney Housing Association, which has been developing its own affordable warmth strategy.

“But more needs to be done. For example, I remain hopeful that our renewables resources can be harnessed in a way that helps reduce bills and alleviates fuel poverty in Orkney.

“It is also clear that, where government helps fund replacement heating systems, more attention should be paid to making sure the solutions are appropriate in each case. Aftercare support and advice are also needed to ensure systems are being used properly.

“Too often, constituents complain to me that they end up footing the bill for costly installations and then find themselves facing higher bills.  Ultimately, neither of these seem sensible as part of a strategy for lifting people out of fuel poverty.”
