Isles residents offered help with recycling
Orkney Islands Council is contacting households in the North and South Isles to offer up to two wheelie bins to help with recycling and waste storage.
From January, the council will be delivering bins free of charge to isles residents with the aim of making recycling easier.
Darren Richardson, the OIC Head of Infrastructure, said: “The bins can be used to store recyclable items before taking them to a recycling point, or as a place to store bags of household waste prior to the weekly waste collection, protecting them from vermin and reducing the risk of them being blown around by the wind.
“We’re carrying out a programme of work to upgrade and increase the storage capacity at recycling collection points in the isles. We are also exploring ways to provide recycling facilities in Egilsay, Wyre and Graemsay, which don’t have facilities of this kind at present.”
He added: “We consulted with residents in the North and South Isles through face-to-face meetings and a postal survey. People asked us to support ways to help them recycle more, reducing the amount of household waste collected in their communities and sent to Shetland for disposal.
“We are hopeful that these measures will assist greatly with this.”
