Last chance to apply for Scapa100 fund

German Battle Cruiser “Seydlitz” (Orkney Library & Archive)

Orkney Islands Council is reminding local groups that applications for the Scapa100 fund — aimed at supporting projects to mark the centenary of the scuttling of the German fleet in Scapa Flow 100 years ago — close this Friday, January 18 at 5pm.

A total of £5000 is available from the Council for organisations who would like to deliver arts and heritage events and activities aimed at supporting commemorations of the scuttling.

Projects which could be eligible might include community events, exhibitions, workshops, performances, walks and talks.

On June 21 1919, Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter gave the command to scuttle the entire German fleet in Scapa Flow. A total of 50 ships went to the sea floor. It is still the greatest loss of shipping in a single day.
