Less than a third of council candidates respond to campaign group’s survey

Less than a third of the candidates standing for election to Orkney Islands Council responded to a Yes Orkney survey on their past voting record at a national level, among other issues.

Eleven out of the 38 candidates supplied information, anonymously, and, according to the campaign group,  appeared to favour independence for Scotland.

The candidates also felt that Holyrood, rather than Westminster, would be best placed to look after Orkney’s interests and economy as the UK heads out of the EU.

The EU referendum saw ten out of the 11 responding candidates vote remain, while one voted leave.

Ten respondents said they thought leaving the EU would be a disadvantage for Orkney, with no respondent saying they thought it would be an advantage.
