The first new purpose built trawler for Orkney owners in almost 20 years took to the water in Poland today.

The 28-metre whitefish trawler, Keila, K121, was ordered from the Vestværftet Shipyard at Hvide Sande, in Denmark last year.

The vessel was built at the Nauta-Hull yard in Gdynia, Poland, and will now be towed to the Vestværftet Shipyard in Denmark for fitting out, having been ordered for the partnership of Tommy Tullock and Michael Leslie.

The vessel is replacement for the current vessel of the same name, the 27.3-metre, single-rig trawler Keila, which was originally built in Norway in 1989, for Westray skipper Tam Harcus.

Although there has been investment in the inshore and whitefish sectors in Orkney for many years, this is the first new whitefish trawler for Orkney owners since the first Russa Taign was built for skipper Tam Harcus and delivered in 1998.

It is hoped that the new boat will be in Orkney towards the end of September.
