OIC prepares for First Word War commemorations

With World War One commemorations due to begin next year, Orkney Islands Council has started putting a team in place to oversee arrangements in the county.

A member/officer working group has been established to plan and organise activities and support the national project team. Part of the programme will be a commemoration of the Battle of Jutland, in May 2016.

The Scottish Commemoration’s Panel has compiled a five-year programme which will focus on key observance dates for the anniversary. This will bring together significant events such as the outbreak of the war and Armistice Day, with major military battles and important domestic events.
