Orkney aim for 21st home victory in junior inter-county
The 69th annual junior inter-county competition between Orkney and Shetland is set to take place this weekend, with Orkney aiming for their 21st home victory over their northern rivals.
Orkney won on Shetland soil for the first time in 21 years last year, and now the county’s young athletes have another landmark victory in their sights — to win back-to-back competitions for the first time since 1994.
Captained by Sam Croy and Taylah Spence, victory would seal Orkney’s 34th triumph in the event, one behind Shetland who are on 35 victories.
The competition is set to start with the athletics at 10.30am on Saturday morning, with the netballers finishing the day’s action off with a 5.30pm start at the Pickaquoy Centre.
Sunday will see three events take place, with the swimmers taking to the water at 10.30am. The hockey players will battle it out at 1pm at the Pickaquoy all-weather pitch, and the footballers will conclude the weekend’s action at the Pickaquoy infield pitch, due to kick-off at 4pm.
