Orkney Folk Festival fires starting gun on summer fun

Orkney Folk Festival kicks off this Thursday evening.

The sound of folk music will be filling the air in Orkney this weekend, as the county enjoys the first of its summer music festivals.

The squeal of fiddles, battering of bodhrans, and hum of accordions will meet the ears of crowds far and wide, as the Orkney Folk Festival enjoys its 41st outing.

Headquartered in Stromness — but with plenty of action in the parishes, isles and in Kirkwall — the festival will bring a host of visiting and homegrown artists together for one of the biggest weekends in the Orkney calendar.

Events begin this Thursday evening and conclude on Sunday night.

Read this week’s The Orcadian for the full lowdown from festival producer Craig Corse, and look out for our coverage online across the weekend and reviews in next week’s edition of the newspaper.
