Orkney to feature in BBC Alba broadcast

EMEC manager, Neil Kermode will feature in BBC Alba’s Tide programme.

Orkney will feature in a broadcast on BBC Alba, this evening, Wednesday.

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), which is based in the county, will be one of the topics focussed on in Tide — a three-part series produced by Gaelic language producer Mac TV, which explores the power and mystery of the tide.

Filmed across four continents, Tide is a visually stunning exploration of one of the most powerful and mysterious natural forces on Earth. The project was funded by Chinese production company LIC, broadcasters BBC ALBA, BBC Northern Ireland, S4C and TG4, and the distribution company Sky Vision.

In this final episode of the series, due to broadcast tonight at 10pm, the filmmakers see how people harness the tide. From a swimming challenge which uses the tide as a catapult to the tidal power devices harnessing Orkney’s fierce tides. It features interviews with EMEC managing director Neil Kermode and Daniel Wise of Orbital Marine Power.
Filming in Orkney was undertaken by co-production partners, Hebridean co. MacTV and Welsh co. Cwmni Da, last summer in Eday and the Mainland.

Margaret Cameron, executive producer at BBC ALBA said: “We are very excited to be working with the partners on this brilliant project. World-class productions such as Tide enhances our offering to the BBC ALBA audience and unlocks the creative and economic potential in our suppliers.”

Iseabail Mactaggart, director of strategy and partnerships at MG ALBA added: “We are proud to work closely with our suppliers in this innovative approach to ensuring new content for BBC ALBA, and proud that Gaelic broadcasting is leading the way in creating these powerful global partnerships.
