The Queen’s Baton Relay gets under way in Orkney today.

The baton arrived off the Hamnavoe in Stromness at 10.15am, and will leave on the Pentalina from St Margaret’s Hope tomorrow at 7.45am.

The relay will be run by 72 nominated baton bearers, who have been chosen for the contribution they have made to the community.

The relay will be officially welcomed at a ceremony at the Stromness pierhead this morning, before heading through the town, and then visiting Dounby, Finstown and Kirkwall before an evening celebration concert at the Pickaquoy Centre at 6.30pm.

The relay is set to start again tomorrow morning at 6.15am in Holm, before visiting St Margaret’s Hope before departing the county.

Further information on the relay, as well as a list of road closures and parking restrictions can be found in this week’s The Orcadian.
