Wind farm project — public meeting announced

A ‘significant announcement’ will be made to residents of Hoy and Walls on Monday.

An update from Orkney Islands Council will be provided for residents of Hoy and Walls on a project looking at how a large-scale wind farm could serve as an important source of income and community benefit for the county.

A public meeting will take place at North Walls school on Monday, April 30, starting at 7pm.

OIC leader and local councillor James Stockan said: “We have a significant announcement to make about the next phase of the project.

“I look forward to providing further details on the night and hope that as many people as possible from the local community come along to talk with us about this.

“Although this is an important milestone for the project, I would like to stress that a final decision has not been taken about whether to go ahead with a wind farm development — a lot more work needs to be undertaken before we reach that stage.”

It was announced last year that OIC is actively looking at new sources of income — through investment in renewables, for example — to help overcome the considerable financial challenges the council and wider Orkney community face over the years ahead.
