Winter Festival in a day . . .
Tomorrow, Sunday, St Magnus International Festival (SMIF) is hosting its first Festival in a Day, as part of the annual Kirkwall Christmas tree-lighting weekend.
The festival will present three events — one in Dounby, and two in Kirkwall.
This year, St Magnus International Festival will expand on the tree-lighting festivities to create a miniature festival for the winter season.
This begins on Sunday afternoon will a recital by star guitarist Sean Shibe in the Milestone Community Church, Dounby.
The Sunday evening concert in St Magnus Cathedral will feature the talented young brass ensemble Trio Vibrazzo, from Norway, alongside the Mayfield Singers. Each year, in addition to the gift of a Christmas tree, Orkney’s twin county of Hordaland sends over a small group of professional musicians, who spend the week leading up to the tree-lighting events performing for Orkney school pupils around the county.
This year, the group comprises three brass players, Siri Aastad Kvaleid, Guro Strand and Stine Nermo.
Following the cathedral concert, there will be a Festival Club event in The Reel, featuring a leading Hardanger fiddle player, Frank Rolland, together with local folk musicians.
