Papal blessing to mark anniversary of Italian Chapel

Pope Francis sent a special blessing to mark the 70th anniversary of Orkney’s Italian Chapel, praying that “this Chapel, built in time of war, may continue to be a sign of peace and reconciliation”

The Pope’s message was read out at a special Mass held in the chapel on Sunday, which was concelebrated by Archbishop of Glasgow, Mario Conti, and The Pope’s representative in the UK, His Excellency Archbishop Antonio Mennini.

The Mass was also attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Orkney, Bill Spence, and the convener of Orkney Islands Council, Steven Heddle, and featured Angela Chiocchetti, the daughter of the chapel’s creator, Domenico Chiocchetti, singing.
