Emergency group’s advice for Christmas Eve forecast
The Orkney Local Emergency Co-ordinating Group (OLECG) met this afternoon in response to predictions of severe weather conditions on Christmas Eve.
The Met Office has issued an Amber Warning that gusts are expected to reach 80 and 90 mph in exposed parts of the north and west of Scotland between 4pm and midnight tomorrow.
Following the meeting, the Chair of OLECG, Police Scotland’s Area Commander for Orkney, Chief Inspector Les Donaldson, said: “Through meetings like this we ensure that key agencies are prepared for eventualities linked to the weather conditions predicted from late afternoon onwards on Christmas Eve.
“As the forecast stands, there is likely to be widespread travel disruption on air and ferry routes.
“We would ask people to bear this in mind – and, if possible, have alternative plans in place – if they’re aiming to travel tomorrow afternoon as they might find themselves unable to get to where they need to be for Christmas.
“We would advise drivers of high-sided vehicles to plan their journeys carefully and take the weather conditions fully into account. We would also ask that people ensure that anything that could be blown about is safely stowed away or tied down.
“Our general advice is to keep an eye on weather forecasts and keep in touch with transport providers.”
Chief Inspector Donaldson added: “With strong winds, there is always the possibility that some homes may be affected by a loss of power. In those circumstances, we would ask friends, family and neighbours to keep an eye on people who may be experiencing problems as a result.”
Anyone needing to contact Police Scotland should dial 101 or 999 in an emergency.
