Feast of football on in this weekend’s sport

Squash player Andrew Torbet is competing in Malmo, Sweden, in the Under-15 European Championships this weekend.

With the tournament already underway, Torbet and his Scotland teammates are competing against some of the top European talent.

The competition will end on Sunday.

The summer football season is now well underway, and this weekend will see Highland Amateur Cup and The Orcadian Parish Cup ties being played.

Two inter-island ties will take place in the Highland Cup, with Lerwick Spurs taking on East United at 2pm in St Andrews, while Shetland league champions, Whitedale take on Orkney ‘A’ League champions, Thorfinn in the tie of the round at 1pm. Also at 1pm, Hotspurs take on Rendall and Burray v Isles United goes ahead at 3pm, before the final match of the day at 4pm between Rovers and Accies.

Sunday sees three Parish Cup ties played. Hoy, Flotta and Walls host Sandwick, and South Ronaldsay also prepare for an isles trip, travelling to Sanday, for two 1pm kick-offs. Stenness host St Ola at 3pm.

Orkney’s First XV men’s side face a trip south to take on St Boswells in the final league match of the season. Despite nothing riding on the game’s result, both teams will be hoping to finish off the season on a positive note. The match starts at 1pm.

Inter-county snooker is also on this weekend, in the Kirkwall Legion.

Orkney’s snooker players have never tasted a home defeat in the 17-year fixture, and the match will begin at 7pm tonight (Friday) with the doubles matches.

The singles will commence on Saturday at 11am.
