Official launch for Digital Orcadian Dictionary
The official launch of the digitised Orkney dictionary is to take place today in Kirkwall.
The Digital Orkney Dictionary has come about through a grant from the Orkney Islands Council Culture Fund and some of the community councils in Orkney.
It is fully searchable from Orcadian to English and from English to Orcadian. The launch takes place today in the upstairs of The Reel at 2.30pm.
Ahead of the launch, Dr Simon Hall said: “Aal o the introductory and backgrunnd material fae the original dictionary is republished here.
“We have decided to include some new additional content, tae help users tae get a feel for the language as a whole, gaan beyond the individual words themsels.
“So, there is a rich and varied selection o historic and contemporary texts in Orcadian, chosen and, in some cases, transcribed by Dr Ragnhild Ljosland o the UHI Centre for Nordic Studies.”
