Orkney FC move up to second after winning incident-packed thriller

Liam Delday hit a brace in Orkney FC’s 3-2 win over Alness United this afternoon.

Orkney FC kicked off the new year in winning fashion, coming out on top against Alness United in an incident packed five-goal thriller.

The three points lifts the islanders up into second spot in the North Caledonian League, one point behind leaders Thurso.

Liam Delday opened the scoring for the away side as Orkney dominated early proceedings. Alness equalised however, taking advantage of a defensive mistake to make it 1-1.

Owen Rendall restored Orkney’s lead before Thorfinn Stout struck the bar with an effort. Delday got his second of the game before half-time to put Orkney 3-1 up and in control at the break.

In the second half, Alness set up a grandstand finish, once again taking advantage of some slack defensive work from Orkney, to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The match would end on a low note however, with substitute Orkney goalkeeper Archiestown Fowden — making his debut — suffering a suspected fractured ankle.
