Orkney Fishermen’s Society shortlisted for sustainable business award
Orkney Fishermen’s Society (OFS) has been shortlisted for the Grichan Partnership Sustainable Business Award in the 2016 Lloyds Bank National Business Awards.
The Stromness-based shellfish processor must now present a live presentation to an expert judging panel in London on September 12, before the overall winners are decided.
OFS managing director Stewart Crichton said: “It’s great to be shortlisted for this prestigious award. Along with major retail customer Marks & Spencer we have taken a very pro-active view to the sustainability of our shellfish stocks around Orkney.
“The members of the co-operative have embraced future friendly fishing practices and worked with our fishery scientists to ensure that local fishery management decisions are based on robust local science.
“We hope that this will lead to greater devolved responsibility to the local community, better market opportunities for local shellfish and help secure the future of our important coastal fisheries.”
The winners will be revealed at an award ceremony in London on Tuesday, November 15.
