Preparations under way for alternate weekly waste collection pilot
Wheelie bins are being delivered to the homes that will help pilot OIC plans for an alternate weekly waste collection.
For residents of waste collection Area C – Holm and Kirkwall South – the alternate weekly collection will begin on Wednesday, May 23.
In preparation for the pilot, homes in Area C will receive three 140-litre wheelie bins – two for recyclable items and another for rubbish that cannot be recycled.
On May 23, people in Holm and Kirkwall South will be asked to put out their grey-coloured bin for refuse collection.
A week later, on Wednesday, May 30, recyclable items contained in green-coloured bins will be picked up – setting the pattern for the alternate weekly collection.
The council aims eventually to introduce an alternate weekly collection service across Orkney – to encourage recycling and save on waste disposal costs.
