A black Limousin cross calf, bred by Gladys and Alistair Linklater of Upper Braebuster, Deerness, claimed the top prize at this year’s Orkney Livestock Association (OLA) show of suckled calves, which took place this morning at Orkney Auction Mart.

The show, which was held at 10am with a sale following, was judged by Mr Balfour Baillie with the association reporting a good number of entries in most classes.

The champion was a steer out of a British Blue cow that was bought in from Denwick in Deerness and was sired by a Limousin bull from Netherhill in Tankerness named “Hartlaw Hero”.

In the sale the calf scaled 335kgs and sold for £1,020 (304.5p) to the Mr Baillie. Reserve champion was a heifer out of the same bull scaling 315kgs and sold for £970 to a south buyer.

Upper Braebuster had a very successful morning, as the competition’s reserve was another of their black Limousin cross calves — this time a heifer and out of the same bull as the champion. She scaled 315kgs and sold for £970 to a south buyer.
