Bogus BT calls hit Orkney

Problem callers should be reported, say OIC trading standards.

Orkney Islands Council’s trading standards team says that local households are being bombarded with recorded messages claiming to be forwarded from BT advising that the household is about to have their internet and landline cancelled.

The calls are emanating from a variety of numbers starting 0262 and this is known to be a spoof STD so there is no way of tracing the origins of the calls, they explained.

A council spokeswoman said: “Needless to say the calls are not from BT, services are not going to be terminated, and the calls should be ignored but the trading standards team would be grateful if this information could be shared with anyone who may be taken in by these calls and does not have call blocking protection in place. Trading Standards still has a limited stock of call blockers which can be supplied and installed free of charge.”

Anyone with concerns is asked to contact OIC Trading Standards on 01856 873535, or email at trading.standards@orkney.gov.uk
