Five new public benches for Kirkwall

Kirkwall BID have been granted planning permission to install five new benches in Kirkwall’s town centre.

Kirkwall BID have been granted planning permission to install 5 new benches and 3 wooden planters in the town centre.

After feedback from the public and BID members indicated that there was a lack of seating around the town centre, Kirkwall BID decided to address this issue by offering places for folk to meet and socialise as they wander about the town.

The installation of the benches will start this week. Working alongside KTHI and Orkney Islands Council, the Kirkwall BID Board selected benches will be in keeping with the current benches in the town and are made from quality hard wood. Installation of the benches is expected to start this week.

The new benches will be found on Albert Street outside the new K2 shop and Dealz, Broad Street outside the Town Hall, Tankerness House Gardens, and outside William Shearers on Victoria Street.

Furthermore, three of the benches will be accompanied by new wooden planters, full of foliage and flowers which will compliment the beautiful hanging baskets already on display throughout the Town Centre.

Carly Tait, Kirkwall BID Manager is delighted to see the benches and planters being installed, and hopes that it will offer folk more opportunities to take a seat and enjoy what the town centre has to offer.

“It is hoped we will be able to add more street furniture to the town centre in the near future, if the first phase of the project is viewed as a success,” she added.
