King Street to be closed for over a week

Orkney Islands Council has advised that King Street in Kirkwall will be closed to traffic from tomorrow morning, Wednesday, August 15, for essential work to take place.

The council says that work is needed to investigate the cause of a number of road defects and to locate a culvert in the street.

The roads team will try to maintain access for vehicles to properties in King Street, but the street will be closed to through traffic in both directions while the work is carried out.

According to OIC, pedestrians should be able to use King Street throughout the work and, if possible, the street may re-open to traffic outwith normal working hours.

“The work is expected to take until Friday, August 24 to complete,” a council spokesman said.

“During this time, drivers needing to access Mill Street should do this via St Catherine’s Place and Queen Street, or East Road and Queen Street.

“The closure of King Street is needed for the work to be carried out safely. The council apologises in advance for the disruption it will cause.”
