Orkney RFC lost to Dumfries Saints RFC this afternoon, 8-16, after a hard-fought contest in damp conditions at Pickaquoy.

The sides traded early penalties in the rain, Orkney’s courtesy of Graham Poke between two from Dumfries, however a try from the visitors in the last play before the break saw them take an eight point advantage into the second half at 3-11.

With both sides struggling to maintain possession in the slippery conditions it was Dumfries who had the better of the early second half exchanges, and they extended their lead with another unconverted try after 55 minutes.

Orkney didn’t give up though and about five minutes later hooker Scott Rendall crashed through to score after sustained possession in their opponents’ 22.

Although Orkney had further opportunities in the last quarter of the game they failed to convert them into points as the Dumfries line held strong.
