Narrow loss for Orkney RFC in hard fought league fixture
Orkney RFC suffered an agonising defeat in BT National League Division 3 at Pickaquoy this afternoon, losing out 26-29 to Haddington.
The home side went down to an early try and were never able to wrestle the scoreboard advantage back from the visitors in a hard-fought contest.
A first half penalty from Graham Poke and a try from from Adam Baird saw Orkney go in 8-17 at half time.
In the second half, with the wind at their backs, Orkney clawed their way back into the match with scores from captain Alan Brown, William Thomson and Darren McLean, but will be left rueing letting their opponents in for a couple of soft scores, as well as missing two easy conversions.
Orkney battled to the end with their efforts earning them two losing bonus points, however, they ultimately fell short in their attempt to record back-to-back home victories.
Next weekend they will be hoping to make amends as they travel to bottom-of-the-league Perthshire, who have yet to chalk up a win this season.
