St Magnus Cathedral, in Kirkwall, with the new ‘lighting wraps’ on the trees.

New winter lighting in the centre of Kirkwall has been unveiled this week.

Under a new project, managed through the Kirkwall Business Improvement District (BID), ‘tree-wrap’ illuminations are being installed on six trees on Broad Street and also the ‘big tree’ on Albert Street.

These lights will be switched on from November through to March each year and are additional to the existing festive and street lighting in the area.

Phase 2 of the project will start in January next year and it is proposed that ‘lighting canopies’ be put  up in various locations in the town centre.

The three locations proposed initially under Phase 2  are the entrance to Bridge Street from Harbour Street, the intersection of Albert Street, Mounthoolie Lane and Laing Street and the entrance to Victoria Street from Broad Street.

The project has been funded through the Kirkwall Business Improvement District (BID), with help Orkney Islands Council and Kirkwall Community Council . The council portion of the funding came from the Kirkwall councillors’ ward funds.

The project has been designed by Colin Begley from HUS Architecture .
