Orkney RFC in third straight league defeat

Orkney on the attack, but the home side failed to score a try this afternoon.

Orkney RFC continue to look for their first win this season, after a 3-41 loss to Newton Stewart in BT National League Division 3 at Pickaquoy this afternoon.

The home side, playing into a stiff breeze, started brightly, captain Graham Poke slotting a straight forward penalty to take the lead after two minutes. However, it was to be their last points of the match.

The visitors were slow into their stride, but managed to capitalise on some slack Orkney tackling to score an uncovered try after 15 minutes.

Gaining in confidence Newton Stewart found it all too easy to get in behind the home side’s defence, and closed out the half with a further two scores. Orkney, in contrast, failed to make one clean line break the entire game.

The opening period of the second half turned into a bit of an arm wrestle as Orkney desperately tried to claw their way back into the match, but the score remained at 3-17 for the next 20 minutes.

Newton Stewart converted a penalty chance to extend their lead, then, in the last 10 minutes ran riot to score three quick-fire tries to seal a convincing win.
