Post Office deal welcomed

A new deal that will see the Post Office take on responsibility for additional DVLA services will help secure the future of the branch network according to Isles MP Alistair Carmichael.

It was confirmed today that the Post Office has been awarded a new contract to provide an extended range of DVLA services over the counter.

The DVLA had been considering 3 tenders for the contract. Ministers confirmed in a written statement to the House of Commons this morning that the Post Office was the successful bidder.

The 7 year deal increases the range of DVLA services that the Post Office provides. Under the terms of the new contract, the Post Office will continue to provide licences and tax discs and will take responsibility for other services such as the licensing of heavy goods vehicles.

Commenting, Mr Carmichael said: “This is good news for customers and good news for the Post Office network. A number of people in the Isles had expressed concerns over the effect that the withdrawal of this business could have had on our local Post Offices.”
