A high level RNLI delegation visited the three lifeboat stations here in Orkney this week as part of a routine review of RNLI operations throughout the UK.

Included in the delegation was Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, chairman of the RNLI Coast Review Delegation.

Vice Admiral Laurence was last in Orkney this summer, along with his wife, The Princess Royal, during the commemorative events marking the Battle of Jutland and the centenary of the sinking of HMS Hampshire.

On his return to Orkney, speaking at Kirkwall Lifeboat Station on Monday afternoon, he said: “I am here leading the small review team at the station here in Kirkwall, and we will be looking at the other stations this afternoon.”

He said that there was a terrific lifeboat here in Kirkwall, which was very well run with an enthusiastic crew, and plenty of volunteers, also doing a great job in fundraising for the RNLI.
