St Ola set to enter Parish Cup fray

Kevin Groundwater celebrates after scoring the vital goal to send St Ola through to the 2014 final on away goals.
Kevin Groundwater’s vital goal sent St Ola through to the 2014 Parish Cup final at the expense of Sunday’s opponents Stromness.

St Ola enter this year’s The Orcadian Parish Cup on Sunday, facing defending champions Stromness in a blockbuster quarter-final tie.

The 15-time winners received a bye in the first round of this year’s competition. Meanwhile, Stromness squeezed into the quarter-finals beating Birsay on away goals.

The last meeting between the pair came in 2014 with St Ola prevailing in a dramatic semi-final. A 2-0 home victory in the first leg had seemingly put the tie out of reach for Stromness, however St Ola scraped through to the final on away goals courtesy of Kevin Groundwater’s header in a 3-1 second leg defeat.

The first leg tie is at the Bignold on Sunday evening. Kick-off is scheduled for 7pm.

The other quarter-final first leg ties were played last weekend, with Westray beating St Andrews 3-2, Holm winning 3-2 at home to Sanday, and Sandwick and Rendall sharing four goals in a 2-2 draw.
