Cancer charity cyclists make Orkney pitstop

The team of OorDaniel cyclists took the ferry from Shetland to Orkney, last night, as part of their ten-day charity challenge.

A group of staff from NHS Ayrshire & Arran made a very short visit to Orkney, today, as part of a ten-day charity cycle round all 14 NHS Scotland Boards.

Having set off, last Saturday, September 22, the team of nurses have been cycling the length and breadth of Scotland to raise funds for children’s cancer charities.

Having visited Shetland yesterday, Wednesday, they arrived in Kirkwall in the early hours of this morning. After making a brief stop at Balfour Hospital, the cyclists caught a quick nap before leaving the town to catch the 6.30am Hamnavoe sailing to Scrabster.

But first, The Orcadian managed to catch them for a quick chat about their challenge.

“One of the reasons I do this is because I lost my son, Daniel, to Neuroblastoma,” explained nurse practitioner Paul Gilmour, who has helped to raise almost £50,000 for cancer charities his son’s memory, under the banner of OorDaniel.

“It was six years ago now, and he was only four at the time.

“Prior to that, we’d always done stuff for CLIC Sargeant as a team from the hospital, but then we lost Daniel and it built up a bit of momentum.”

Throughout their journey, the team have been pushing to reach their £5,000 fundraising target through online donations. To find out more and help a good cause, you can visit their page on www.uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Team/oordaniel
