Celebrating 80 years of Sandwick Young Farmers’ Club
Orkney’s oldest Young Farmers’ Club is celebrating its 80th anniversary today, Friday.
Set up in March, 1937, the Sandwick club was the first Young Farmers’ organisation in the county. The East Mainland branch followed in April, 1937, and Harray in 1939. The Orkney district organisation held its first meeting in 1949.
To mark the event, the club is hosting an anniversary dinner in the Sandwick Hall tonight, Friday, which will also feature displays of memorabilia and speeches from present and past members of the club – including the oldest surviving chairman, Charlie Merriman, and the current chairman, Gary Stanger.
